NJDEP Issues Statewide Fire Ban on Public and Private Lands Amid Extreme Fire Risk

October 31, 2024
  • Back To News Stories

In light of an extreme fire risk across New Jersey, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has announced a statewide fire ban, effective on both public lands and private properties. This restriction will remain in place across all municipalities as part of an effort to safeguard residents, especially during the upcoming fall celebrations, including Diwali and Halloween.

Restrictions Under the NJDEP Fire Ban:

  • Prohibited Fires: All outdoor fires, including bonfires and residential fire pits, are strictly prohibited.
  • Allowed Fires: Only fires in elevated stoves that use propane, natural gas, or electricity are permitted.
  • Banned Materials: The use of wood, charcoal, kerosene, or gas torches is restricted.
  • Fireworks: No fireworks displays or celebrations involving pyrotechnics are allowed.

Wildfire Prevention Tips

To further reduce the risk of accidental fires, NJDEP recommends following these safety tips:

  1. Dispose of Smoking Materials Safely: Avoid discarding cigarettes, matches, or any smoking materials on the ground.
  2. Indoor Wood Stove Safety: When using indoor stoves or fireplaces, ensure embers are controlled. Always douse ashes with water before disposal.
  3. Vehicle Safety: Park only on solid surfaces, as hot exhausts can ignite dry grass or vegetation.
  4. Yard Tool Caution: Power tools like lawnmowers and chainsaws can emit sparks. Exercise caution when using these tools in dry areas.
  5. Child Safety: Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach.

Additional Resources

The NJ Department of Community Affairs Division of Fire Safety has also released a memo clarifying these fire restrictions and including guidelines for municipalities outside the primary response areas of the Forest Fire Service. For more information on wildfire prevention, visit njwildfire.org.

By adhering to these precautions, residents can help protect New Jersey’s communities and enjoy a safe holiday season.
